Welcome to the Diabetes Ride!
The Diabetes Ride is a pledged equestrian trail ride that began in 1995 and has been running annually since that time. We hope you’ll plan to join us every year! The Diabetes Ride benefits Camp Hodia (Idaho Diabetes Youth Programs) providing diabetes camps for kids and teens with Type 1 diabetes.
Anyone may participate in this trail ride. We encourage all of our participants to collect pledges for their ride and turn them in on the day of the ride. If you collect more than $175 in pledges, you ride for FREE! We often have riders that collect more than $500 in pledges—sometimes as much as several thousand dollars! That money is put to great use and is much appreciated by the staff at both Camp Hodia! Read more about Camp Hodia and their programs at www.hodia.org.

How to Play & Win
Registration this year is $35 and is mandatory for all adult riders. Registration for kids 12 and under is just $12. The registration fee includes a raffle ticket & BBQ dinner and an official Diabetes Ride t-shirt. You will also receive $5 in raffle tickets if you preregister prior to the event.
In order to be eligible for one of the prize incentives listed on this site, you must:
- Follow the contest and ride rules.
- Turn in a minimum of $175 in collected pledges (cash, check or money orders) the day of the ride.
To be eligible for Ride Prize Incentives you must turn in all your pledges
on the day of the ride. Additional pledges can be turned in after the day of
the Ride, and while very appreciated, will not be counted toward your day of Ride Prize Incentive Total. Those competing for Grand Prizes will be able to pick their prize in
order of pledge amounts turned in on Ride day from highest to lowest.
Before the Ride
Sponsors may make a flat pledge of $10, $25 or $100 (or any sum of their choice) to support your fundraising on behalf of Camp Hodia. Pledges must be turned in at the time you check-in for the Diabetes Ride. Checks should be made out to Idaho Diabetes Youth Programs or IDYP. (TIP – Collect your pledges at the time the pledge is made!) Print the required information on the sponsor sheet and provide a tax-deductible receipt to the person making the pledge (these may be printed out on this website).
Day of the Ride
Plan on packing your own CHAIRS for seating to eat and enjoy the awards ceremony. We also request that you bring a bucket for dipping your own horse water. Registration begins at 10:00 am. Take your registration form and waiver with you and check in at the registration table. After you have registered you will receive your safety orientation and ride instructions at the trail head. For safety reasons and to relieve congestions, horses MAY NOT be at the registration area! Please leave your equine friends safely tethered to the trailer while you do your paperwork!
The first group of riders will leave at 10:00 am. Groups of riders will be allowed out of camp on staggered departure times. THIS IS NOT A SPEED OR TIMED EVENT! If you intend to ride you must begin by 12:00 pm and be finished by 3:30 pm to be eligible for prizes.
During the Ride
The courses are clearly marked. The checkpoints and water/rest stations are conveniently located. Please observe all posted rules and instructions as outlined in this brochure and included in your registration packet. Racing or unsafe riding will not be tolerated on the course - careless riding will result in you being asked to leave the ride. Again, this is not a timed event! |

Facts about the Diabetes Ride
Some Facts about Diabetes:
Right now 10% of Americans, or 30 million people, have diabetes, including 88,000 in Idaho. More astonishing, however, is that about a third of these people don’t know it. What’s more, the Idaho Statesman reports that the CDC estimates that in the US today more than 2 million young people show signs of “pre-diabetes.” When left uncontrolled, diabetes leads to devastating complications — heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, nerve damage, amputations. But when individuals learn how to self-manage their diabetes and control their blood sugars, they cut their risk for complications in half.
The Diabetes Ride: A volunteer effort:
The Idaho Arabian Breeders Association and Southwest Idaho Trail and Distance Riders joined efforts eleven years ago to organize The Diabetes Ride. Today this unique event is a draw for families from throughout the Treasure Valley and beyond who enjoy the benefits of fresh air and camaraderie with fellow riders, supporters, volunteers and those who want to support a community effort to educate the public about the risks of this disease and support diabetes education and research.
This unique event is a trail ride in the Eagle foothills attracting 200 – 350 riders every year. Riders can choose between two trails that are on private property. Riders pay a $35 entrance fee that includes the trail ride, a raffle ticket, and a great BBQ hosted by H&M Meats after the ride. Many riders choose to raise pledges rather than pay the entry fee to compete for prizes. All riders receive an official Diabetes Ride t-shirt. Riders that raise a minimum of $175 begin earning gift certificates from D&B Supply. The more ambitious riders who raise a minimum of $1,000 compete for Grand Prizes.
In addition, every rider has a chance to participate in a raffle. Raffle prizes include gift certificates to local restaurants, horse tack and feed, movie and theatre passes — the list goes on and on! Additional raffle tickets can be purchased at the ride. The event also features a silent auction. BBQ tickets can be purchased for individuals who do not ride for $10.
The Beneficiary:
Proceeds from the event benefit Camp Hodia - Idaho's only camps for kids and teens with diabetes!
Camp Hodia is actually 5 separate camps for kids and teens with diabetes held throughout the year. The camps include Hodia Kids Camp, Hodia Shooting Stars, Hodia Teen Camp and Hodia Ski Camp and Hodia Wilderness Camp. The caring staff at Idaho Diabetes Youth Programs is dedicated to improving the lives of children and teens with diabetes. Idaho Diabetes Youth Programs Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that sponsors camps and programs for all children and teens with type 1 diabetes. These programs foster self-reliance and demonstrate that people need not be limited by diabetes. Teaching by example, their staff provides mentoring and support to these kids, teens and families regardless of ability to pay in a safe, healthy, and respectful environment.
